Indian Education

Overview

The American Indian Education Department was developed in MPS after the passing of the Indian Education Act in 1972, a legislature in the US that sought to address disparities in public education for American Indian student with allocated funding. The department supports and strengthens educational outcomes for American Indian students (both federally and state identified) by promoting culturally responsive instruction, family & student engagement and partnerships with MPS departments, schools and the broader community so that American Indian students are empowered to reach their full potential through educational experiences that value their cultural identities. School-based student support is offered through our American Indian language classes (Ojibwe and Dakota), bi-weekly Student Native Culture & language affinity spaces along with professional development for educators, support to American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC) & MOA and family engagement outside of the classroom.
