Property Tax Levy

School districts in Minnesota have the authority, as granted by state law, to levy local property taxes. Some of this authority is automatic and is determined by state formulas. Districts also have the ability to call elections to ask voters to approve additional levy authorities, such as is the case with MPS.

As noted in the table below, property taxes makeup a substantial portion of the district’s overall revenue, though a large portion is reserved for debt service payments and is therefore not available for operating uses. The property tax levy, payable 2026, which provides funding for the fiscal year 2026-27 budget, was certified by the school board on Dec. 9, 2025.

The total levy was $280,273,074.51, which represented a 0.42% increase from the prior year levy.
